Ep. 12 Recap – Justin Nyce

Talk about a “dream job.”  That’s what I thought of when I sat down to rap with local Cleveland DJ, Justin Nyce.  Imagine getting paid to play music at the hottest night clubs –  surrounded by beautiful women, booze and euphoria.  For Justin, there’s no imagining :: it’s reality!

Justin is proof that hard work, dedication and commitment (i.e. he hasn’t missed a Saturday set in years) leads to success.  He is also proof that in order to find success, you must chase your dreams.  Your passions.  Or else you will be stuck living a life for everyone else — unfulfilled, lost and hopeless.  This could have been Justin’s path had he not put the brakes on college and pursued his dream of becoming a staple in the electronic dance club music scene.

We spoke on the college thing quite a bit during the episode.  Again, I am not anti-college by any means.  If I came across that way, it was not my intent.  I believe that college is the stepping stone to a vast array of opportunities — lawyer, doctor, engineer, financial planner/investment banker.  It is a necessity if you have hopes of pursuing a continuing education career and using that degree toward becoming a specialist in the fields listed above (and several others not listed).  But I am somewhat anti-college if you are simply going because you have nothing else to do and decide to get a degree in communications all the while racking up student loan debt and getting fat on pizza and beer.  If you are coming out of college with no real path or direction, I have a problem with that.  Especially when you owe tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt and have no real way to make it up.  And especially considering how technologies have changed the way of the world and have provided an abundance of opportunities to become successful without the college diploma.

Overall, I found my conversation with Justin to be inspirational in that here’s a local kid from Akron who is now resident DJ at some of Cleveland’s top spots.  I look forward to his continued rise in the DJ industry and hope to see him at some of the world’s hottest clubs in years to come.

Ep. 12 – Justin Nyce, nightclub DJ

Justin Nyce is one of the resident DJ’s at FWD Day + Nightclub and Magnolia Cleveland.  His energy, creativity and strong background in percussion are the recipe behind his diverse multi-genre sets.

In this episode, we hear about Justin’s path from disengaged college student to committed nightclub DJ.  We hear about how Justin pursued his dreams in the electronic dance music/DJ world, working small bars from the time he was a teenager to now the largest nightclubs Cleveland has to offer.  We hear about the constant grind that the most successful DJ’s endure and how treating this as a business (and not pleasure) above everything else is critical to success.  We hear about Justin’s strong affiliation with FWD Hospitality Group and how they have continued to grow together as one tight-knit family.  We end with a discussion about Justin’s future plans and his outlook on the entire dance music industry.
